Poughkeepsie…Dutchess County Executive William R. Steinhaus and County Parks Director Steve Olsen are pleased to welcome the more than 1,600 riders who will be taking part in the fifth annual 2008 Harlem Valley Rail Ride this Sunday, July 27th at the Harlem Valley Rail Trail in Millerton, rain or shine. The 10.5 mile length of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail (HVRT) from the Village of Millerton to the Wassaic Train Station is part of the Dutchess County Government Parks System.
“There is no better way to spend a weekend day than with family and friends on the Harlem Valley Rail Trail,” said County Executive Steinhaus. “Participants in the Harlem Valley Rail Ride will be able to enjoy a smooth, easy to ride surface while enjoying wonderful scenic views of Dutchess County.”
The Harlem Valley Rail Ride offers mileage choices for all skill levels from 22 to 100 miles. The shorter rides are perfect for families with children, beginning cyclists, and those who are looking for a fun ride that's not too strenuous. The 55-, 75-, and 100-mile choices require more effort. The Harlem Valley Rail Ride is part of a full weekend of activities and features including educational rides offered both on Saturday, July 26th and Sunday, July 27th as well as the Hill Climb Time Trial, for those interested in competitive cycling.
Plans are underway to complete Phase IV of the HVRT, which will span approximately 8 miles and complete a key link in the Rail Trail between Millerton in northeastern Dutchess County and Ancram in southeastern Columbia County.
