Loneliness and isolation affect countless older adults around the world; still, even though it happens so often, whether we experience it ourselves or see it in others, it’s still hard to talk about. OFA wants you to know: you are not alone. Loss of friends and family, health issues and lack of transportation can contribute to feeling disconnected from others. OFA can help, through our Friendly Calls program.
Since 2023, OFA has paired hundreds of Dutchess County older adults with friendly phone calls. Our Friendly Calls program confronts loneliness and isolation with a welcoming phone call. Participants receive one call a week for eight weeks from a trained OFA volunteer, checking in and having light conversations.
Want to Help? Become a Friendly Calls Volunteer
It’s easy. You make one call a week, for eight weeks, at 20 to 30 minutes per call - from the convenience of your home, your neighborhood park, or anywhere else you get a good phone signal. The impact is huge.
Register today for a required OFA Friendly Calls Volunteer Orientation session. Reach out to OFA at 845-486-2555 or ofa@dutchessny.gov. Orientations take about one hour, and are scheduled weekly at OFA headquarters at 114 Delafield Street in the City of Poughkeepsie. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
Want to Receive Friendly Calls? Here’s How
Many Friendly Calls participants are already known to OFA through programs like our Home Delivered Meals, Case Management and other services – but a Friendly Calls participant can be any older adult living in Dutchess County. It’s a great way to get to know us before you need us. Contact OFA at 845-486-2555 or ofa@dutchessny.gov to learn more.
