Poughkeepsie…Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro and Nelson Eddy Rivera, USN (Ret), Director of the Dutchess County’s Division of Veterans Services invite citizens to participate in two special Memorial Day ceremonies to be held on Memorial eve and Memorial Day.
On Sunday, May 24th at 8pm, the Division of Veterans Services will host the 4th Annual “Illumination of the Walkway” ceremony and sunset vigil at the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park. There will be a flag ceremony with the Pleasant Valley American Legion, Highland Veterans of Foreign Wars and New York State Park Police. A retired flag will be presented to the family of Captain Trevor Jon Yurista, USMC, a lifelong resident of Pleasant Valley and Poughkeepsie area who was killed in action in Afghanistan. The event will also feature Buglers Across America spanning the Walkway to play Taps. The public is invited to help illuminate the Walkway during this special event by bringing a flashlight, glow stick or other non-flammable lighted object.
On Monday, May 25th at 11am, the annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Dutchess County War Memorial will be held. The Dutchess County War Memorial is located at the John K. Rinaldi Memorial Park at the intersection of Raymond Avenue and Main Street in the Town of Poughkeepsie. This will be the first time Dutchess County will host this annual event since the memorial’s ownership was transferred to the County from the Dutchess County War Memorial Committee who faithfully maintained since its original dedication nearly 30 years ago.
