Poughkeepsie...This afternoon at the American Legion Post 1302 in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro joined members of the Dutchess County War Memorial Committee (DCWMC) for a ceremonial transfer of ownership of the Dutchess County War Memorial to Dutchess County Government.
"We are grateful for the work of the Dutchess County Memorial War Committee for their many years of dedication and perseverance in ensuring those who have made the great sacrifice are honored. Dutchess County Government will proudly step forward to ensure the future care of this important community monument," said Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro.
The Dutchess County War Memorial is located at intersection of Main Street and Raymond Avenue Extension in the Town of Poughkeepsie. The Dutchess County War Memorial Committee, a non-profit corporation, has been responsible for the operation and maintenance of the memorial since it was erected 28 years ago.
The DCWMC requested that Dutchess County Government take responsibility for the maintenance of the memorial and the adjacent parking lot. The land had been owned by New York State as part of its right-of-way for the Raymond Avenue Extension and has been transferred to the County of Dutchess. The County will maintain the memorial monument including repairs as necessary, addition of names to the monument, setup for ceremonies and insurance coverage. The Town of Poughkeepsie will continue to provide snow removal and lawn care services.
The Dutchess County Legislature unanimously approved the assumption of ownership and maintenance of the Dutchess County War Memorial with the adoption of Resolution No. 2014286 in September. County Executive Molinaro signed the resolution at the special ceremony today.
