“When I served as County Legislator, I requested the County consider redevelopment and adaptive reuse options for former Nelson House Annex. In the subsequent years, the County has done that, with multiple studies and analyses, and the conclusion is clear – the damage these structures have sustained is far too significant for reuse to be a feasible option. Demolishing a building that has been a prominent component of Market Street is not a decision that I take lightly, but one we must make to ensure public safety.
I have reviewed the reports and letters from experts and carefully considered the advice of our Department of Public Works team. I have heard the call made by City of Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik in his 2012 State of the City address and understand that action must be taken to remove the building. Now we must move expeditiously to ensure no one is harmed by this decaying structure.
As I noted in my State of the County Address, Poughkeepsie has a plan for Market Street – opening it to two-way traffic, enhancing pedestrian access and creating a streetscape that will inspire and attract new investment. We look forward to seeking private interests who can develop a new structure that remains true to the historic nature of the property and architecture that was once the actual Nelson House.”
