Poughkeepsie … Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino invites residents of all abilities and their families to a free, sensory-friendly performance of the holiday classic ballet, “The Nutcracker,” presented by the New Paltz Ballet Theatre. The show will take place at the Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie on Friday, Dec. 13, starting at 6 p.m.; doors open at 5 p.m., and outside food and drink are not permitted in the theater. Seating is limited, and reservations are required online at dutchessny.gov/nutcracker.
County Executive Serino said, “Every child of every ability deserves to enjoy the holiday season to the fullest, and ‘The Nutcracker’ is a beloved classic that appeals to all of us. Dutchess County is proud to again offer a stress-free night at the theater for children with disabilities and their families while they enjoy this holiday tradition. I encourage individuals and families to join us in celebrating the season with this holiday standard.”
The show will be a “no-hush” performance meant to foster an informal, non-judgmental atmosphere where audience members can experience and respond to the performance in their own way. The Bardavon will adjust both the lighting and sound to make the experience more enjoyable for those on the autism spectrum or who experience sensory concerns.
