SERINO DECLARES MARCH 25TH AS ‘WE CARE REMEMBRANCE DAY’ IN DUTCHESS COUNTY

Published: 3/25/2025

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino has officially designated March 25th as ‘We Care Remembrance Day’ in Dutchess County to honor those more than 15,000 nursing home residents and staff who tragically lost their lives following the executive order that directed COVID-positive patients into nursing homes during the pandemic.

While serving in the New York State Senate, Serino led the charge in designating March 25th as a day of remembrance, recognizing the devastating impact this policy had on families across the state. Now, as County Executive, she is ensuring Dutchess County formally acknowledges this solemn anniversary, standing in solidarity with those who lost loved ones and reaffirming the County’s commitment to protecting its most vulnerable residents.

“Over 15,000 lives were lost – mothers, fathers, grandparents, and the caregivers who looked after them – because of a decision that should have never been made. These were real people, not statistics, and their lives mattered,” said Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino. “As someone who has listened to countless heartbreaking stories from families who never got to say goodbye, I want them to know – we remember, and we care. This day is about honoring their lives and making sure this never happens again.”

Serino has long been a vocal advocate for nursing home residents and their families, demanding full transparency surrounding the state’s response to the crisis. In 2021, she introduced a resolution in the State Senate to officially recognize We Care Remembrance Day across New York.

Today, on March 25th, Dutchess County encourages residents to take a moment to remember those who were lost, honor their families, and reflect on the importance of ensuring that seniors always receive the care, dignity, and respect they deserve.
