POUGHKEEPSIE, NY ... Helping our neighbors take simple steps to reduce waste and protect the environment, the Dutchess County Division of Solid Waste Management is hosting a free Home Composting Workshop on Monday, June 29, at 5:30 p.m. at the LaGrange Association Library, 1110 Route 55 in Lagrangeville. This public event will give participants the knowledge and tools they need to turn everyday organic materials into healthy, nutrient-rich compost for their gardens and landscapes. Seating is limited; registration is required and can be completed at dutchessny.gov/workshop.

Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino said, “Small actions can make a big difference, and composting is an easy way for families to help care for our environment. This workshop will show our neighbors how simple it is to reduce waste at home while creating something that benefits their gardens and our community, and I encourage you to attend.”

Led by an experienced composting educator, the workshop will cover the basics of starting and maintaining a backyard compost system. Attendees will learn what materials can be composted, how to avoid common problems, and how composting helps reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills while supporting a healthier environment.

Kerry Russell, Deputy Commissioner for the Division of Solid Waste Management, said, “Many people are interested in composting but are not sure where to begin. This workshop is designed to make the process easy to understand and show how a few simple changes at home can help reduce waste, recycle organic materials and create a valuable resource for gardens and landscapes.”

The Division of Solid Waste Management also offers backyard compost bins for purchase at a reduced cost for County residents. More information about this program and other waste reduction initiatives is available on the Division of Solid Waste Management’s website, dutchessny.gov/solidwaste.

Through educational programs and community partnerships, the Division of Solid Waste Management encourages recycling, waste reduction and environmentally responsible practices that help keep Dutchess County clean and sustainable for generations to come.
