Sue Serino Announces Return of County’s America Recycles Day Art Challenge
Students encouraged to turn recyclable materials into creative works of art

Published: 10/9/2026

POUGHKEEPSIE … Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino is happy to announce the County’s 3rd annual “America Recycles Day Art Challenge,” inviting school-aged children across Dutchess County to turn recyclable materials into original works of art while learning more about the importance of recycling and reuse.

Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino said, “Recycling starts with small choices, and those choices can make a big difference. This challenge gives our young neighbors a fun and creative way to learn about recycling while seeing everyday materials in a whole new way. We encourage students, teachers, schools and homeschool groups throughout Dutchess County to take part and show us what they can create.”

The art contest gives students an opportunity to think creatively about materials that might otherwise be thrown away. By transforming everyday recyclables into artwork, students can have fun while discovering simple ways they can help reduce waste and protect the environment.

Students may create two- or three-dimensional artwork using recyclable materials such as paper, plastic, aluminum and glass. Non-recyclable materials, including glue and tape, may be used to assemble artwork; but the primary materials should be items that can be recycled or reused.

Entries must be registered and submitted by Nov. 5, 2026. Artwork will be evaluated based on the clarity of the concept and description, as well as creativity. Winners will be selected in four age groups:

•    Kindergarten to 2nd Grade
•    3rd to 5th Grade
•    6th to 8th Grade
•    9th to 12th Grade

Winners will be announced on Nov. 6, in recognition of America Recycles Day on Nov. 15, and winning artwork will be displayed at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park from Nov. 9 through Nov. 17.

Contest guidelines, registration information and additional details are available at dutchessny.gov/solidwaste. Questions can be directed to Recycling Educator Dani White at solidwastemgmt@dutchessny.gov or 845-486-2841.
