Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino and the County’s Office of Veterans Affairs today recalled the military service and community contributions of U.S. Army Specialist (SPC) Edward “Hoppy” Fischer a beloved Pleasant Valley resident, who passed away in 1999, at this month’s “Honor-A-Veteran” ceremony, held at the Pleasant Valley Fire Department in Pleasant Valley.

Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino said, “Edward Fischer was a remarkable man who proudly served our country in Vietnam, putting himself in harm’s way to help protect his fellow soldiers. When he came home, he continued serving others for 22 years as a firefighter, always ready to lend a hand to someone in need. He was a loving husband, devoted father and friend to so many. His kindness, courage and big heart left a lasting mark on Pleasant Valley. We are so grateful for his sacrifice and the wonderful example he set for all of us, and we’re proud to spotlight his life of service through our ‘Honor-A-Veteran’ program so he can continue inspiring our Dutchess County neighbors.”

After enlisting in the U.S. Army on Aug. 6, 1968, Edward Fischer served with Battery G, 68th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 15th Artillery Group, including a tour in Vietnam from 1969-70 as an automatic weapons crewman and gunner. As an advance man, SPC Fischer operated a dozer tank to clear paths for troops, helping protect the soldiers who followed behind him. His service earned him several honors, including the Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Star, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Sharpshooter Rifle Medal. After returning home, SPC Fischer continued serving his community for 22 years with the Pleasant Valley Fire Department, while remaining a devoted husband, loving father and loyal friend whose humor, generosity and willingness to help others left a lasting mark.

Dutchess County invites nominations for its monthly “Honor-A-Veteran” ceremonies, held April through November, to pay tribute to deceased U.S. Armed Forces veterans who served in wartime or peacetime. Community members can submit nominations and required military documentation for consideration through the County’s Office of Veterans Affairs.
