POUGHKEEPSIE … Dutchess County is joining law enforcement agencies across New York State to help keep roads safe during Halloween weekend. The STOP-DWI high-visibility engagement campaign runs from Friday, Oct. 30, through Sunday, Nov. 1, and encourages drivers to make safe choices and avoid driving while impaired.
Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino said, “Everyone wants to have a fun Halloween, and we can each play a role in keeping our neighbors safe. Whether you’re trick-or-treating with your family or getting together with friends to enjoy Halloween, please make good choices that keep us all safe; and if you see something out of the ordinary, please contact your local law-enforcement agency.”
Halloween brings trick-or-treating, parties and other celebrations, but it can also bring added dangers on the road. From 2019 through 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recorded 201 traffic deaths involving alcohol and 176 deaths involving drivers with a blood-alcohol concentration of .08 or higher during the Halloween campaign period.
Drivers are encouraged to slow down, stay alert, watch carefully for pedestrians, especially children wearing costumes who may be difficult to see after dark and never get behind the wheel if they’ve consumed alcohol or other substances that can compromise their ability to operate a vehicle. Impaired driving is not limited to alcohol; drugs and other substances can also affect a person’s ability to drive safely.
Alcohol-impaired driving remains a serious national concern, year-round. About one-third of all U.S. traffic fatalities involve drivers with a blood-alcohol concentration of .08 or higher. High-visibility enforcement and public awareness campaigns help discourage impaired driving and remind motorists that their choices can have life-changing consequences.
The Halloween campaign is part of a statewide effort supported by STOP-DWI New York and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. Similar campaigns take place throughout the year, including during Super Bowl weekend, St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the winter holidays.
