POUGHKEEPSIE, NY … Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino and the County’s Office of Veterans Affairs today celebrated U.S. Army Nurse Corps Second Lieutenant (2LT) Helen Slocum-Mostachetti, a beloved Town of Dover resident who served during World War II, at the County’s most recent “Veteran of Distinction” ceremony, held at Dover Town Hall.
Dutchess County Executive Serino said, “Helen’s life reflects the very best of our community. She has served our nation, cared for others and built a lasting legacy of love and dedication. Her story reminds us of the impact one person can have through a lifetime of service. She is a true American hero. It was so special to celebrate with Helen and her family as we honored her as a Dutchess County ‘Veteran of Distinction.’”
Helen Slocum-Mostachetti graduated from Dover High School in 1941, completed her nursing training at then-Vassar Brothers Hospital, and served as a nurse in the Army Nurse Corps from 1945 to 1947, caring for wounded veterans at Army hospitals in Texas and Oklahoma. After her military service, she devoted decades to nursing and education in the Hudson Valley, retiring in 1981 before continuing as a school nurse and substitute teacher for the Dover Union Free School District. At the age of 103, Helen is renowned locally for a lifetime of service to her country and community, as well as her enduring love of family, golf, the New York Yankees and New York Jets.
Dutchess County Veterans Affairs Director Adam Roche said, “Helen represents the strength and dedication we honor in all of our veterans. She answered the call to serve our nation and cared for those who sacrificed for our freedom. Her service, resilience and commitment to others are an inspiration to us all.”
Monthly “Veteran of Distinction” ceremonies take place on the second Tuesday of each month from April through November, hosted in the community where the honored veteran resides. This year’s ceremonies are spotlighting members of the Greatest Generation, Dutchess County’s living World War II veterans.
