Sue Serino Recognizes Local Middle School Students As “Serino Superstars”
Anti-Bullying Initiative Celebrates Kindness and Inclusion

Published: 6/26/2026

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Over the past several months, Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino has proudly partnered with middle schools across the county to recognize 44 exceptional students as “Serino Superstars.” First launched during her time in the New York State Senate, the Serino Superstars initiative honors the middle school students who are going above and beyond to uplift those around them through acts of kindness.

Statistics show that 1 in 4 middle school students will report being bullied. This staggering number has a profound impact on youth mental health, and its effects can last later into adulthood. The Serino Superstars initiative is just one of the many ways to combat bullying and promote kindness and inclusion throughout our school communities.

“The students nominated are truly the unsung heroes of their school communities,” said Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino, “Whether it’s helping their friends with schoolwork, speaking up against bullying or, lending a helping hand, they are making a real difference by creating spaces where everyone feels valued and included. You never know what someone is going though, and these simple acts truly go a long way. I am continuously inspired by these students and am grateful to the middle schools who partnered with us to celebrate them and champion these important values."

Students were nominated as “Serino Superstars” by their school faculty and honored during special celebrations, including school events with teachers and parents, school assemblies, and moving‑up ceremonies. At each event, Serino spoke about the power of small acts of kindness, reflecting on the meaning behind this initiative, which stemmed from witnessing her brother being bullied growing up, the tragic consequences that followed later in his life, and her desire to prevent others from experiencing the pain he endured. Students were also read why they were nominated before being presented with a special certificate and yard sign.
