In an ongoing effort to engage local students with careers in the skilled trades, Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino and the Wappingers Central School District are partnering to host a FREE ‘Careers in the Skilled Trades’ event on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at Roy C. Ketcham High School in Wappingers Falls, starting at 6:30 PM. This event is open to all students across Dutchess County interested in exploring future career paths in the skilled trades, as well as adults who may be looking for a new career.

“I did not take the traditional career path, which is why I think it is so important to show students that there truly is no ‘one size fits all approach’ when it comes to planning your future,” said Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino. “Our community is home to some incredible opportunities in the trades, and these jobs often come with a great-paying salary and room for growth. Since launching these events in 2022, we have been able to connect almost 1,000 neighbors with different career avenues that they might never have known existed.”

The Skilled Trades Fair is a valuable chance for businesses to network and connect with local students and young adults who may be interested in learning more about pursuing a career in their respective trade.   There is ongoing need for skilled workers, and this event will highlight the many opportunities for high school graduates to pursue lucrative career pathways with a certificate or license through trade schools and other programs.

Dr. Dwight Bonk, Superintendent of the Wappingers Central School District said, “County Executive Serino is to be commended for all efforts in promoting skilled trades fairs as well as her unwavering commitment to career and technical education. Many businesses have indicated that the demand for skilled employees in these careers continues to increase in our region. Business, Education, and Government must continue to work collaboratively by developing effective partnerships to provide our students with the necessary information, skills, and training to enter these fields and address our collective workforce development needs.”

There will be more than 60 businesses and organizations at the April 18th event, representing Some a wide range of industries including electrical, construction, welding, and plumbing. The Dutchess County Department of Public Works and the Wappingers Central School District’s Facilities Department will also be attending to show different career opportunities available in government and educational facility management.
