Assistant Majority Leader Angela Flesland (R,C,I-Poughkeepsie) announces a DWI Awareness event to be held on Friday, June 29th from 5 to 8 PM.  The event will be hosted in the center court of the Poughkeepsie Galleria, 2001 South Road, Poughkeepsie.

The event is to promote “Lisa’s Challenge” in memory of Town of East Fishkill resident and Roy C. Ketcham graduate Lisa Moray, who was the victim of a fatal car accident as a result of a drunk driver in 2008. Moray, a star basketball player who held the all-time Wappinger School District record for points among both boys and girls had recently graduated from Sacred Heart University on a full athletic scholarship.

The challenge asks participants to not drive impaired, not get in the car with an impaired driver, and take the keys from a friend who had too much to drink.  Representatives from Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the Dutchess County STOP-DWI program will be on hand to provide information on preventing impaired driving. In addition, members of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office will have a driving simulator and fatal vision goggles for attendees to discern impairment.

“As a member of the STOP-DWI Board it was my privilege to bring about awareness of this threat to our community,” said Assistant Majority Leader Angela Flesland. Legislator Flesland wishes to thank MADD, Dutchess STOP-DWI and police agencies throughout the county for their commitment to stop impaired driving.

Legislator Peter Wilkinson (R,C-Pleasant Valley), the Legislature’s Public Safety Committee Vice Chairman and STOP-DWI Board member, as well as former Chief of Police in the Town of Poughkeepsie said “too often I saw the terrible consequences of drinking and driving. I find these efforts to be very beneficial by taking this proactive step of informing the public about the impact of drinking and driving.”

Legislature Chairman Rob Rolison (R,C,I-Poughkeepsie) stated, “As a law enforcement veteran, I witnessed firsthand tragedies as a result of drinking and driving. The Dutchess County Legislature is grateful to the citizens, programs and agencies involved in the prevention of alcohol or drug impaired driving.”
