Swimming Facilities

The Department of Behavioral  & Community Health (DBCH) permits and monitors certain pools and beaches to ensure the health and safety of residents and visitors who utilize these facilities.

DBCH regulates the following types of pools and beaches

All swimming pools except:

  • A pool owned by an individual for the use of his friends and family
  • Spa pools under medical supervision
  • Float or relaxation tanks

All beaches except:

  • A beach owned by an individual for the use of his friends and family
  • Beaches owned by a condominium or cooperative whose members have deeded rights to use

Certifications

New York State only accepts the certifications listed below.

Please check this list of acceptable certifications before a class is taken or before your staff is hired. These "Fact Sheets" (certifications) are updated annually.


Certifications can be obtained from other providers. Check the fact sheets above.

Certifications must be maintained at your pool/ beach for review during routine inspections.

Fully online first aid and CPR courses are NOT acceptable.

Drowning Prevention Seminar

DBCH offers an awareness-heightening presentation on drowning victim recognition. This seminar will be given by Department of Health staff upon receipt of your request. To arrange for a training session, please call the district office that covers your facility.
