Published: 5/15/2024

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and Town of Hyde Park Police report the investigation into a fatal auto accident which occurred shortly before 12 pm on 5/15/24 on South Quaker Lane in the Town of Hyde Park.

On the above date and time the Town of Hyde Park Police responded to reports of a crash on South Quaker Lane near Honeywell Lane, and upon arrival it was discovered that the crash involved one car with four (4) occupants. At that time the operator and front seat passenger appeared to have life-threatening injuries, and the two rear passengers appeared to have non life-threatening injuries. All four were transported from the scene to local hospitals, where the operator was ultimately pronounced dead. Members of the Sheriff’s Office’s Crash Investigation Unit were requested to respond to the scene and are continuing to investigate the cause(s) of the crash in conjunction with Hyde Park Police. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the vehicle was traveling southbound on S. Quaker Hill Rd when the operator lost control, at which time the vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole. At this time the primary factor in the crash appears to be unsafe speed, however the investigation is continuing.

All four occupants are High School students at Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School (FDR) and BOCES in the Town of Hyde Park and are believed to have been traveling from FDR to BOCES when the crash occurred. The Sheriff’s Office and Hyde Park Police have been in close contact with both the Hyde Park and BOCES School Districts, and will continue to work with them to provide any assistance needed at this difficult time. The identities of the students are being withheld due to the sensitive and emotional nature of the incident, and please see the attached statement from the school districts for further information.

The investigation is continuing, and more information may be released at a later time as it becomes available.
