The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office reports the investigation into a one-car accident with serious injuries on East Main St in the Village of Pawling.
Sheriff’s Deputies responded to East Main St near Coulter Ave at approximately 8:20 pm on 6/19/13 for a report of an auto accident. Upon arrival it was discovered that the operator/sole occupant, William Vitro (age 51 of Pawling) was unconscious and seriously injured. Mr. Vitro was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie for treatment of a head injury, and at the time of this release remains there in critical condition.
Investigation has revealed that Mr. Vitro was operating a Nissan Xterra in a northwesterly direction on East Main St when he failed to keep right, at which time the vehicle crossed over the center pavement markings and struck a tree on the opposite side of the roadway. Preliminary findings so far have indicated alcohol involvement and failing to keep right to be possible factors, however the investigation into the exact causes(s) is continuing. The Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit is conducting the investigation, and more information may be released as it becomes available.
