The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of Chase R. Smith, age 27 of Pownal Vermont, for felony drug possession on 3/29/14 at approximately 12:45 pm in the Town of Amenia.
On the above date & time, Sheriff’s Deputies stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Route 22 near Sinpatch Rd in Amenia, at which time Mr. Smith was identified as the operator & sole occupant. Through further interviews and investigation, Mr. Smith was found to allegedly be in possession of 176 Opana pills, which were located in the vehicle. Opana is a powerful pain killer and a controlled substance under the NYS Public Health Law. Mr. Smith has been charged with the following:
• Criminal possession of a controlled substance 3rd degree (Class B Felony)
• Unlicensed operation of a vehicle (traffic infraction)
• Fail to keep right (traffic infraction)
After being processed, Mr. Smith was arraigned before the Town of Amenia Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 bond.
As in any criminal case, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
