The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office reports the investigation into a fatal crash involving a car and truck, which occurred on Route 44 near Bontecou Rd in the Town of Washington at approximately 9 am on 12-5-15.

Preliminary investigation has shown that a car with three (3) occupants was traveling in a southwesterly direction on Route 44 when it was struck head-on by a northeast-bound dump truck loaded with gravel. The driver of the car died at the scene and the passengers, who are both small children, were initially transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital before being flown to Westchester Medical Center. Investigation up to this point has shown that the car appeared to have crossed over into the truck’s lane of travel when it was struck. Route 44 between Little Rest Rd and Kennels Rd was closed for investigation, and remains closed at the time of this release. The names of those involved are being withheld at this time pending the notification of family members.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit and Detective Division, who were assisted at the scene by the State Police and the Millbrook Fire Department. The Sheriff’s Office is also interested in speaking with any possible witnesses to this crash, and anyone who may have witnessed it or was in the area at that time is urged to contact the Sheriff’s Office as soon as possible. The Sheriff’s Office can be contacted by phone at 845-486-3820 (ask for Detective Pfitscher), or via the tip line at 845-605-CLUE (2583) or dcsotips@gmail.com. More information may be released as the investigation continues.
