The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of William S. Smart, age 59 of Poughkeepsie, on 11/10/15 at approximately 12:45 pm for introducing drugs into the Dutchess County Jail.
On the above date and time Deputies were contacted to respond to the jail for a report of a visitor that was found with contraband. Further investigation revealed that Mr. Smart had come to the jail to visit an inmate, and during the visit Mr. Smart was observed by jail staff to allegedly pass contraband to the inmate. The contraband was seized and was found to be a small quantity of pills and marihuana.
At this time Mr. Smart has been charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th degree (Misdemeanor), Promoting Prison Contraband 2nd degree (Misdemeanor), and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana (Violation). After being processed he was released on an appearance ticket, and is due to reappear before the City of Poughkeepsie Court on 11/16/15 at 9 am.
As with any criminal case, the charges described above are merely accusations and Mr. Smart is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
