Code Blue: Providing Warmth, Safety, and Support

Dutchess County is here to help during cold weather emergencies, ensuring everyone has access to a safe, warm place to stay. Our Department of Community and Family Services (DCFS) works closely with a strong network of community and faith-based organizations to provide emergency shelters and warming centers throughout the county.

These organizations include:

  • Hudson River Housing
  • Community Housing Innovations (CHI)
  • Pathways
  • HONOR (helping operate shelters and PODs in Poughkeepsie year-round)
  • Christ Church in Poughkeepsie (a seasonal warming center)

Daytime Warming Centers During Code Blue
During a Code Blue alert, Dutchess County PODs at 150 North Hamilton Street in Poughkeepsie are open as daytime warming centers in addition to overnight shelter.

How to Access Emergency Shelter or Warming Centers
By calling first and utilizing the resources available, Dutchess County can help ensure every resident has a warm and safe place to stay during the coldest nights. We’re here to help; please don’t hesitate to reach out:

Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM
Call DCFS at 845-486-3300 for emergency shelter placement.

After 5 PM and on Weekends
Call 2-1-1, select English or Spanish, then press 7 to speak with trained staff who will assist with overnight shelter placement based on availability.

Why We Encourage You to Call First
While we have many resources available, shelters and warming centers may occasionally reach capacity. To ensure you or your loved ones can access assistance quickly and safely, please call ahead.

Calling helps us:

  • Find Available Space: We’ll check availability and connect you with the nearest shelter or warming center.
  • Arrange Safe Transportation: If needed, we can help coordinate transportation to get you there safely.
  • Offer Tailored Resources: Our team can assess your unique situation and connect you with services that meet your needs.

If a family with young children needs shelter on a frigid night, calling ahead allows us to find the most appropriate placement — like a hotel room where they can stay together in comfort and privacy – without delays. Without calling, they might arrive at a warming center that may not have enough space for the whole family or isn’t designed for children.

Outreach for Vulnerable Individuals
Our specialized outreach teams are also on the streets, connecting with vulnerable individuals where they are to ensure they’re aware of available resources. In emergency situations, you can also contact local law enforcement or call 911, and they’ll help connect you with the right services.
