The Dutchess County Comptroller’s Office has released its follow-up audit of the Dutchess County Public Defender’s Office for the period January 1, 2019-December 31, 2023 (.pdf). The previous audit was released by the Comptroller’s Office in November 2019 for the period January 1, 2012-December 31, 2018.

This audit reviewed revenue claims made by the Public Defender to New York State during the 2019-2023 period to ensure that funding had been maximized. An update regarding Dutchess County’s Assigned Counsel Plan and changes to the rates for the 18-B attorneys is also included.

While no serious discrepancies were found, the Comptroller’s Office identified minor inconsistencies regarding correct record keeping for the receipt of grant revenues, as well as not completing revenue reconciliations in a timely manner.

The newly confirmed Public Defender intends to work with staff to ensure that the Comptroller’s recommendations are implemented.
