Icy Roads Creating Hazards throughout Dutchess County Residents Advised to Stay Off Roads

Poughkeepsie… Icy  road conditions are creating hazards throughout  Dutchess  County and residents are advised to stay off the roads if possible and use extreme caution if travel cannot be avoided.      Ground temperatures remain below freezing in most areas, creating black ice conditions.     As rain falls, it is quickly washing off road treatment product and ice is quickly forming on frozen surfaces, despite the warmer temperatures.

Dutchess County Commissioner of Public Works Noelle Knille said, “County highway crews are out working to treat road surfaces and we are interacting with both local and state highway operations to monitor road conditions countywide.”

Black ice is thin coating of glazed ice on a surface.  These areas of the ice are often practically invisible to drivers, creating a risk of sliding and skidding and subsequent accidents due to the loss of traction.

Dutchess County Executive Marcus J. Molinaro noted, “We encourage residents to be safe and stay off the roads if possible.    If you must travel, use extreme caution and allow for extra travel time.”
