Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Collection to be Held June 7th

Poughkeepsie…The Dutchess County Resource Recovery Agency will again host a Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Event on Saturday, June 7th from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at the Town of Rhinebeck Highway Department (119 Rhinecliff Road, Rhinebeck).  A complete list of accepted and non-accepted material is included below.   Pre-registration is required and there is a $5 fee.  Call the Dutchess County Resource Recovery Agency at (845) 463-6020 or visit to pre-register and schedule an appointment.

The Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling events provide a safe, environmentally conscious way to dispose of materials no longer needed or used. Residents have the opportunity to safely dispose of any product containers marked “warning,” “hazardous,” “flammable,” “poisonous,” or “corrosive,” as well as responsibly recycle old electronics such as computer monitors, printers or other electronic materials. According to Lindsay Carille, Dutchess County Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Solid Waste Management said, . “Over 150,000 pounds of chemicals and 70,000 pounds of electronics were collected at HHW events last year. When residents properly dispose of these materials, thousands of pounds of potentially harmful toxins never have the chance to harm anyone or pollute our environment.”

The collection events provide for the proper disposal of various household items that contain toxic materials but may not necessarily have a warning label attached. Examples of such items include: computers, TVs, printers, stereos and mercury-containing products e.g. fluorescent bulbs.. “Residents have an opportunity eight times a year to properly dispose of toxic chemicals and electronics. This is the time of year when the old TV from a dorm room or the old computer that was replaced with a laptop can be brought to an event and recycled,” said DCRRA Executive Director William Calogero.

There will be five more collection events in 2014 at a variety of locations throughout the county. The collection events are partially funded by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

*Event will also feature safe medication disposal from 8am to 10am.
Please note, there is no fee for medication disposal, but pre-registration is required.

Dutchess County Resource Recovery Agency’s 2014 Household Waste Disposal Days

Materials that WILL be accepted:

Product containers marked with words: "Warning”, “Hazardous", "Flammable", "Poisonous", or "Corrosive"Photo chemicals, non latex driveway sealer, pool chemicals, creosote, kerosene, flammable liquids, metal polish, turpentine, stains, varnishes, strippers, thinners, gasoline/oil mixture, brake fluid, auto fluids, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers, adhesives, resins, solvents, oil & lead based paints (no latex!), mercury containing devices, button cell batteries for watches & hearing aids, lithium & sealed lead acid batteries, compact fluorescent lights and fluorescent tubes, and small non-Freon appliances (such as humidifiers, toasters, irons, and electric heaters.)

Electronic Equipment Collection

Computer Monitors, Central Processing Units (CPU's), Modems, CRT's, Terminals, Laptops, Keyboards, Mouses, Fax Machines, Printers, Scanners, Copiers, Typewriters, TV's, VCR's, DVD Players, CD Players, Tape Players, Radios, Stereo Equipment, Cables, Answering Machines, Telephones & Video Game Systems.

Bins will also be available at the DCRRA location only to dispose of junk mail, white paper, magazines, newspaper and commingled bottles & cans. There is no fee charged and no registration needed for these bins.

Materials that will NOT be accepted:

Ammunition or explosives, asbestos products, latex driveway sealer & latex paint, motor oil, car batteries, antifreeze, broken glass, building or construction debris, tires, furniture, medical waste/medicines, propane or other flammable gas cylinders, radioactive materials, scrap metal, metal drums or empty containers, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners.
