POUGHKEEPSIE, NY … Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino and the County’s Office of Veterans Affairs today memorialized the life and legacy of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant (SSG) William “Bill” Cole, a respected Hyde Park resident, at this month’s “Honor-A-Veteran” remembrance, held at Roosevelt Fire District Station 3 in Hyde Park.
William Cole was a member of “the Greatest Generation,” who answered his nation’s call by enlisting in the United States Army in 1944 and serving with the 5th Infantry Division in the European Theatre during World War II. After returning home, he built a career with IBM and remained deeply committed to his family, church and community as a dedicated parishioner of St. James Church and member of American Legion Post 1303. Known for his humility, generosity and willingness to help others, SSG Cole quietly lived a life of service and sacrifice. He was recognized for his military contributions with the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross in 2001. SSG Cole passed away on Jan. 9, 2007 and is remembered for his courage, loyalty and lasting impact on those who knew him.

Dutchess County honors his sacrifice and the legacy he built through his actions, and we continue to proudly celebrate our heroes like William through our ‘Honor-A-Veteran’ program.”
Dutchess County invites nominations for its monthly “Honor-A-Veteran” ceremonies, held April through November, to pay tribute to deceased U.S. Armed Forces veterans who served in wartime or peacetime. Community members can submit nominations and required military documentation for consideration through the County’s Office of Veterans Affairs, with the next ceremony scheduled for Aug. 20.
