Poughkeepsie, NY – The Dutchess County Legislature unanimously passed a resolution, authored by Chairman Gregg Pulver, which directs the County Department of Community and Behavioral Health to establish a grant program to increase the number of Controlled Substance Public Disposal Locations “Shed the Meds” boxes within the County.

Dutchess’ “Shed the Meds” boxes locations are a mixture of law enforcement and pharmacy-operated collectors spread across the County. Nine towns, mostly in rural communities, currently do not have a drop-off location. Pharmacies within those nine towns will be eligible for this new grant funding in order to cover the cost of the box, disposal and other related costs.

Three months ago, when Pulver was elected Chairman he named the opioid crisis as one of his priorities and was pleased to put forward his first measure to address the issue. During the meeting, Pulver outlined how his rural community of Pine Plains doesn’t have a location to drop-off old medication and his hope that this grant program leads to a disposal site.

A recently published report found 16 pharmaceutical compounds in the Hudson River– which is particularly troubling for towns that receive drinking water from the River. Touting the environmental benefits, Pulver said, “everyone was upset when the Coast Guard wanted to put barge anchorages on the river and the possibility of them polluting but what about us? We are polluting the river every day with old meds and that needs to stop.”

Legislator Deirdre Houston, a florist, has provided flowers for four opioid-related funerals this year. “Two towns I represent, Washington and Amenia, don’t have a place for people to dispose of their old prescriptions” said Houston. “As a florist and a member of the school board, I have seen first-hand how old pills can either start or feed an addiction. I will be encouraging pharmacies in my district to take advantage of this opportunity.”
