EMS Matters: Essential Care, Saving Lives

Emergencies happen when we least expect them, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) provide life-saving care when it’s needed most.

You may be surprised to learn that nationally, and here in New York State, EMS is not a mandated, essential service. There is no state or federal funding to support it, and there are increasing challenges to ensuring EMS care is readily available including:

  • diminishing workforce,
  • fewer volunteers,
  • rising costs and
  • public misconceptions about ambulance use

In Dutchess County, EMS Matters. County Executive Sue Serino and the Department of Emergency Response are collaborating with municipalities, fire departments, rescue squads, commercial providers, educators and others to ensure there is an ambulance available when you need it most in Dutchess County.

With a historic $2 million investment in 2025, Dutchess County has a multi-faceted initiative to ensure EMS is sustainable for the future.  Learn about our work, including regional collaboration and coordination, supplemental ambulance service, public education campaigns and recruitment and retention efforts for those looking to begin or continue a career in EMS.
