“Today the Dutchess County Executive unveiled his 2012 budget to legislators, the public, and the media beginning in earnest the County Legislature’s budget review process.

We have been encouraged in recent weeks with news that the County Executive’s funding plan will stay under the state property tax cap while committing to fund community service providers at 2011 levels. Legislators recognize, like they did one year ago, that these are tough economic times that will require tough economic decisions. In making tough economic decisions last year, the County Legislature managed to craft a 2011 budget that funded County core services and restored funding community service providers yet decreased the tax levy. It is our hope that with some hard work, innovative thinking, and collaborative efforts the Legislature can adopt a 2012 budget that again funds essential County services while keeping taxes low.

With the tentative 2012 budget now in the laps of all County Legislators, they will begin the task of reviewing it line-by-line and meeting with departments as well as contract agencies to discuss funding needs and options. The County Executive’s Budget Director will formally present the proposed budget to the Legislature on Wednesday, November 9th at 5 p.m. and there will be a public hearing on Thursday, November 10th at 7 p.m. Both meetings will be held at the Dutchess County Legislature, 22 Market Street, 6th Floor, in Poughkeepsie.

The Budget, Finance, and Personnel Committee will adopt its version of the 2012 budget on Tuesday, November 29th and the full Legislature will do the same at its Board Meeting on Monday, December 5th.”
