COUNTY LEGISLATURE PASSES HISTORIC FUNDING FOR DUTCHESS COMMUNITY COLLEGE

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – As part of the process of reviewing Dutchess Community College’s $69.3 million budget, the County Legislature hosted a public hearing at their July 9th Board Meeting. As the College’s local sponsor, Dutchess County’s FY2018-2019 contribution totals nearly $24 million with an appropriation increase of $1.75 million.

Chairman Gregg Pulver (R-Pine Plains) authored an amendment, adopted unanimously, requesting the County Comptroller conduct a comprehensive program audit of the college’s programs and services with the purpose of identifying cost saving measures. “We need to ensure that taxpayer funds are being spent wisely,” said Pulver. “With declining enrollment, programs need to be cost-effective and align with local job opportunities. I support this historic increase of funding because I recognize the college’s value but along with that does not come a blank check.”

“This significant contribution increase shows the Community College’s level of importance to our County and economic impact,” said Assistant Majority Leader Don Sagliano (R-Pleasant Valley). “I am a product of Rockland Community College so I understand the role that community colleges play in our education system. As the Legislature’s only Certified Public Accountant, I know the merit in having another set of eyes on their programs and hope that cost savings are identified.”

Legislator Will Truitt (R-Hyde Park) said, “In a constantly changing economy, it is paramount we have an education source that is adaptive and efficient. This review by the Comptroller will only enhance the educational offerings and ensure we are being good stewards of tax dollars. I think we all know someone who attended DCC and have witnessed the stellar caliber of alumni that they produce- that’s why I am committed to quality education and this historic level of funding.”
