Understanding Your Tax Bill

Types of property tax bills and when they are due

Town and County Taxes

Fiscal years for county, town, and special district taxes are January 1 - December 31. Tax bills are sent to property owners in January and are payable without interest by the last day of February.

Currently, the Town of Poughkeepsie, Town of Wappinger, and Town of Hyde Park allow taxes to be paid in three installments. All other municipalities allow for single payments only.

School Taxes

School fiscal years run from July 1 through June 30. Single payment school taxes are generally due in September or early October.  The Millbrook, Dover, Carmel, Rhinebeck, Webutuck, Pawling, Pine Plains, and Poughkeepsie City school districts allow two part installment payments per RPTL §928.

Village Taxes

Village fiscal years run from June 1 through May 31. Taxes are payable June 1 through July 1.

Information on your tax bill

Most information on the property tax bill is mandated by state law. There’s a lot of information shown on the bill and it is important property owners understand its contents. In a collective effort among assessment, tax and IT professionals, Dutchess County has designed a tax bill that arranges this information in an easy-to-read format.    Please note: the City of Poughkeepsie uses its own bill format.

You can view a sample bill and get a brief description of selected items by choosing any of the bill formats at the bottom of this page. Hovering over or clicking on a red arrow will display a brief explanation of each topic. More information on the contents of the property tax bill can be obtained from a pamphlet published by the NYS Office of Real Property Tax Services at:

The sample bills are for information only and are not representative of any specific tax bill. They are not to be used to estimate actual taxes. Your bill may display more special districts or use different wording for specific tax purposes.
